Lord Jesus Christ, shepherd and leader of your church assist our new Bishop Thaddeus with the power of your blessing that he may inflame us by his zeal and be an example for us by his conduct. May he be able to carry us through his love, strengthen us through his patience, keep us in the joy of the Holy Spirit, bless us by his prayers, instruct us by his teaching unite us to Your Holy People and lead us to a genuine service of you and your family in spirit and truth. Presentation of the Bishop-Elect

One of the priests addresses the ordaining bishop:

Most Reverend Father, the Church of Eshowe requests that you ordain the priest THADDEUS XOLELO KUMALO for the office of Bishop

CB: Do you have the Apostolic mandate?
PR: We have it.
CB: Then let it be read
All sit while the mandate is read
PR: These are the words of the Mandate.

EXAMINATION

The Bishop-elect then rises and stands in front of the ordaining Bishop, who examines him…

CB: Kuliqiniso elidala lesinqumo sawo Baba ukuba uMbishobhi –mbekwa abuzwe imibuzo phambi kwamakholwa ephathelene nokugcina kwakhe ukholo nesikhundla sakhe sobuBhishobhi. Mnewethu othandekayo, uzimisele yini ngegrasiya loMoya Ocwebileyo ukusebenzisa isikhundla sakho ngokuyikho kuze kube sekufeni kwakho, isikhundla phela osuzosithola khona manje ngokubekwa kwezandla na?

After the Litany of All Saints, the principal ordaining bishop alone stands and with hands joined says:

CB: Lord be moved by our prayers. Anoint your servant with the fullness of priestly grace, and bless him with spiritual power in all its richness. We ask this through Christ our Lord

LAYING ON OF HANDS

IMPOSITION OF THE EVANGELIUM

The ordaining Bishop places the open book of the Gospels upon the head of the bishop elect, designated priests hold the Book of the Gospels above his head until the power of consecration is completed.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

The principal-consecrator with his hands extended over the Bishop-elect, says the prayer of consecration aloud

CB: Yise weNkosi uJesu Kristo, Nkulunkulu onesihe, wena unikeza intoko malo kuwo wonke umuntu, uthi usezulwini ube unakekela izi dalwa zakho ngisho nezincane, wena Somandla wazo zonke izinto ngisho zingakenzeki. Ukwembulelwa nguwe sekuqophe phansi imithetho ye Bandla lakho, lokhu wakukhombisa kwakhona ekuqaleni ngabantu abalungileyo bakaAbraham owababeka uphawu. Kwakhona ekuqaleni kulelo- Bandla wamisa inkambiso yalo kanye nobupriste, ukuze indawo yakho eyingcwele ingasali buze ngaphandle kwemininingwane yezin konzo. Kusukela ekuqaleni komhlaba wawuyilokhu ujatshuliswa wu kudunyiswa ngabapriste owawubakhethile.

The following part of the prayer is prayed by all Bishops:

So now pour out upon this chosen one that power which is from you, the governing Spirit whom you gave to your beloved Son Jesus Christ, the Spirit, given by him to the Holy Apostles, who founded the Church in every place to be your temple for the unceasing glory and praise of your name.

Then the principal-consecrator continues alone:

CB: Father, you know all hearts. You have chosen your servant for the office of Bishop. May he be a shepherd to your holy flock, and a high priest blameless in your sight, ministering to you night and day; may he always gain the blessings of your favour and offer the gifts of your holy Church. Through the Spirit who gives the grace of high priesthood grant him power to forgive sins as you have decreed, and to loose every bond by the authority which you gave to your apostles. May he be pleasing to you by his gentleness and purity of heart, present ing a fragrant offering to you, through Jesus Christ your Son, through whom glory and power and honour are yours with the Holy Spirit in your Church now and forever.

A: Amen.

ANOINTING OF THE BISHOP’S HEAD

The principal consecrator takes the Chrism and anoints the head of the Bishop, saying:

God has brought you to share the high priesthood of Christ. May He pour out on you the oil of mystical anointing and enrich you with spiritual blessings.

UKUNIKEZWA KWAMAVANGELI

The principal consecrator hands the Book of the Gospels to the newly ordained Bishop and says:

CB: Receive the Gospel and preach the word of God with unfailing pa tience and sound teaching.

INVESTITURE: RING, MITRE AND CROSIER UKUGQOKISWA: INDANDATHO, ISIGQOKO NODONDOLO

The principal consecrator places the ring on the finger of the new Bishop’s right hand, saying:

CB: Yamukela lendandatho njengesibonakaliso nophawu lokholo. Lon doloza ukholo, ulondoloze uvikele iBandla eliyingcwele elingumakoti kaNkulunkulu.

The principal consecrator places the mitre on the head of the new Bishop, in silence: He then gives him the crosier and says:

CB: Take this staff as a sign of your pastoral office: keep watch over the whole flock in which the Holy Spirit has appointed you to shepherd the Church of God.

SEATING OF THE BISHOP

The newly ordained Bishop is asked to sit on the Bishop’s chair, after which the principal consecrator sits at his right.

KISS OF PEACE/ UKWANGANA KOXOLO

The newly ordained Bishop then receives the kiss of peace from the principal consecrator and all the other Bishops present. At this time the Secretary General of the SACBC introduces them as they come up one by one. All the clergy of the diocese follow suit

The principal finally presents the newly ordained Bishop to the faithful of his Diocese.
